All the Application event logs are unexpectedly deleted when you clear the MSDSS logs in Windows 2000 or in Windows Server 2003 (906516)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you clear the Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services (MSDSS) logs in Microsoft Windows 2000 or in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, all the Application event logs are unexpectedly deleted. Therefore, potentially critical Application event information is lost.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the MSDSS event log is a filtered view of the Application event log. This filtered view displays only MSDSS events. When you clear the log, you delete all Application events, not just those that are displayed in the current filter.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

MSDSS is included with services for Novell NetWare 5.0. MSDSS synchronizes the Active Directory directory service with Novel Directory Services (NDS) and with NetWare 3.0 and later versions of NetWare.
