The Distribute Software Updates Wizard stops responding for up to 15 minutes when you click Finish in SMS 2003 with Service Pack 1 (906260)

SYMPTOMS

On a Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 Administrator console, the Distribute Software Updates Wizard stops responding when you click Finish. The wizard does not resume for up to 15 minutes.

This problem occurs if one of the following is installed on the SMS site server:
  • The SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates
  • The SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Updates

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The length of time that the wizard stops responding depends on the number of updates in the update installation package. Typically, this problem occurs only when there are more than 1000 updates.
