SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1, you receive the following error message:
The volume for "Virtual PC" cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again.
When you insert the Virtual PC 6.1 installation CD into the CD drive and then try to restart Virtual PC 6.1, you may receive the following error message:
Changes to the file permissions are being ignored. If Virtual PC was launched from an external volume, please refer to the Virtual PC Read Me for further information. Virtual PC will run without Virtual Switch networking
If you try to eject the installation CD from the CD drive, the installation CD does not eject unless you quit Virtual PC 6.1.

Additionally, when you start Virtual PC 6.1, you may be prompted to type the administrative password for the computer.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you ran Virtual PC 6.1 for the first time from the Virtual PC 6.1 installation CD instead of dragging the Virtual PC 6 icon to the Applications folder on the computer. When you run Virtual PC 6.1 for the first time from the installation CD, Virtual PC 6.1 installs several items on the hard disk. However, the Virtual PC 6.1 program is not installed on the hard disk. Instead, an alias for the Virtual PC 6.1 program may be created in the Applications folder. If you double-click this icon when the installation CD is not in the CD drive, you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. On the Go menu, click Applications.
  2. Locate the Virtual PC 6 icon, and then drag the icon to the Trash.
  3. Insert the Virtual PC 6.1 installation CD into the CD drive.
  4. If a window that contains the contents of the CD does not open, double-click the CD icon.
  5. Drag the Virtual PC 6 icon from the installation CD to the Applications folder.
  6. Eject the installation CD from the CD drive.
  7. Start Virtual PC 6.1.
