The partition type changes when you split a mirrored dynamic volume in Microsoft Windows 2000 (904819)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you split a mirrored dynamic volume in Microsoft Windows 2000, one of the split volumes has a 0x6 (PARTITION_HUGE) partition type. This symptom occurs regardless of the original partition type.

For example, you may have a mirrored volume that was formatted with the NTFS file system. The volume partition type is 0x7 (PARTITION_IFS). When you try to click Break Mirror in the Disk Management tool (Diskmgmt.msc), and then you split the mirrored volume, you will have two simple volumes. One of these volumes will have the original 0x7 partition type. The other simple volume will have the 0x6 partition type. You cannot predict which volume will have the 0x6 partition type.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, right-click the mirrored volume on a disk that you do not need, and then click Remove Mirror.

For example, assume that the following conditions are true:
  • You have a Disk1 and a Disk2. These disks have a mirrored volume E.
  • You split the mirrored volume.
  • You do not need the volume on Disk2.
In this scenario, right-click the volume on Disk2, and then click Remove Mirror. The partition type of the simple volume on Disk1 remains 0x7. The volume on Disk2 is removed.

MORE INFORMATION

Some backup and restore programs depend on the partition type of the target volume. These programs may not successfully backup or restore the data on the volume that has the 0x6 partition type.
