A desktop computer that has ActiveSync 4.0 installed may not download and update the proxy settings of a Pocket PC device (904667)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to synchronize a Pocket PC device with a desktop computer that has Microsoft ActiveSync 4.0 installed, the desktop computer may not download and update the proxy settings of the Pocket PC device. Typically, the Pocket PC device cannot access the Internet when this behavior occurs. You experience this issue when the following conditions are true:
  • The Pocket PC device already has proxy information set up.
  • You try to synchronize the Pocket PC device to a desktop computer that has different proxy information than the Pocket PC device.
Note The desktop computer may only download and update the proxy settings of the Pocket PC device during synchronization if the Pocket PC device does not contain a proxy entry.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the proxy server settings of the Pocket PC device and the desktop computer are not the same.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, make sure that the proxy settings are the same for the Pocket PC device and for the desktop computer. To change the proxy settings, follow these steps:
  1. On the desktop computer, start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, click Connections, and then click LAN Settings.
  3. In the Local Area Network Settings window, click to select the Proxy Server check box, and then enter the appropriate values for the Address and Port values.
  4. Click OK to exit the Local Area Network Settings window.
  5. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.

When you access two different networks that use different proxy servers, you must manually reconfigure the proxy settings if you switch networks. In Internet Explorer, you can create two connections and configure each connection with the appropriate proxy server settings. When you want to connect to a different network, you change the connection to reflect the network that you actually want to use.
