FIX: A device that is running Windows CE cannot recognize an externally mounted FAT file system volume (904255)

SYMPTOMS

A device that is running Microsoft Windows CE cannot recognize an externally mounted FAT file system volume as a valid FAT volume.

CAUSE

Nonstandard FAT volumes are not recognized.

RESOLUTION

Software update information

Prerequisites

This update is supported only if all previous updates are installed.

Restart requirement

After you install this update, you must perform a clean build of the whole platform. To clean the platform, click Clean on the Build menu. To build the platform, click Build Platform on the Build menu. You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this update.

Windows CE verifies that a volume has a valid FAT header. Volumes that are created by some disk utilities do not strictly comply with the FAT format and are not recognized by Windows CE. To make Windows CE recognize these volumes after this update is installed, you must set the following registry value.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS]
"BypassFATSectorCheck"=dword:1
