After you register an event sink on a mailbox store, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service does not start in Exchange Server 2003 (903935)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, you register an event sink on a mailbox store. After you have registered the event sink, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (Store.exe) stops responding if either of the following events occurs:
  • You restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.
  • The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service automatically starts after a restart of the Exchange Server 2003 server.
Additionally, you experience the following symptoms:
  • An event that is similar to the following is logged in the Application log:Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Application Error
    Event Category: (100)
    Event ID: 1000
    Date: Date
    Time: Time
    User: N/A
    Computer: Computer_Name
    Description: Faulting application STORE.EXE, version Version_Number, faulting module EXOLEDB.DLL, version Version_Number, fault address 0x0002145b. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://support.microsoft.com.
  • When you try to manually start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, you receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
    System error has Occurred.
    The process terminated unexpectedly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Criteria field in the event sink has a value of Null. For more information about the Criteria field, visit the following Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Web site:

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) before you install the hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you install the hotfix. However, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service and all dependent services will be restarted.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, unregister the event sink.
