A Windows XP-based computer stores the IP address of the proxy server instead of the FQDN when you configure Internet Explorer 6 to use the Automatic Proxy Discovery feature (903926)

When you do this, the registry stores the IP address of the proxy server that hosts the Wpad.dat file instead of the fully qualified domain name (FQDN).CAUSEThis problem occurs because the source code for the Wininet.dll file is designed to use the resolved IP address of the proxy server from which the Wpad.dat file was downloaded.
RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. - On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
- Type FEATURE_WPAD_STORE_URL_AS_FQDN_KB903926, and then press ENTER.
- Click FEATURE_WPAD_STORE_URL_AS_FQDN_KB903926.
- On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
- Type Iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
- Click Iexplore.exe.
- On the Edit menu, click Modify.

In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
- On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
- Type Explorer.exe, and then press ENTER.
- Click Explorer.exe.
- On the Edit menu, click Modify.

In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
Note The valid values for the subkey are 0 and 1. A value of 1 enables the hotfix. A value of 0 disables the hotfix.
- Exit Registry Editor.
- If you updated the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry hive, restart the computer. If you updated the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry hive, log off the computer, and then log on again to see the behavior changes.
