A DNS server that is running Windows Server 2003 cannot resolve new A resource records (903720)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition

SYMPTOMS

A Domain Name System (DNS) server that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 cannot resolve new host address (A) resource records when the following conditions are true:
  • There are already other resource records, such as mail exchanger (MX) resource records, for the host name.
  • The clients ask the same DNS server for other nonexistent records in the same domain.
Note This problem occurs not only for new A resource records, but also for any combination of existing and new records.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the negative cache entry never times out in the DNS server cache. In this scenario, other requests reset the negative Time to Live (TTL) attribute of the new DNS resource record with a fresh TTL value. The fresh TTL value is generated by another resource record.
