Microsoft has released the Excel 2003 post-Service Pack 2 hotfix package for Microsoft Office Excel 2003.

This article describes the following items about the hotfix package:

  • The issues that the hotfix package fixes.

INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Office Excel 2003 issues that are fixed in the hotfix package that is dated November 7, 2005.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issues.

887964The LINEST function returns an incorrect value in Excel 2003

902062 Part of a worksheet is missing when you run a VBA macro that uses the ScreenUpdating property to unhide a worksheet after you close the Document Recovery task pane in Excel 2003

906679 When you use the "Open and Repair" option to repair a worksheet, the DDE links are removed from the worksheet in Excel 2003

This hotfix package fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • When you open a saved workbook that contains a hidden window in Excel 2003, you may experience the following symptoms:
    • The current workbook may remain as the active workbook.
    • The saved workbook may open as an inactive workbook in the background.
  • You open an Excel 2003 file in a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services document library. This file contains a link to another file. However, when you open the Excel 2003 file, the link is not updated. This issue may occur when the document library folder name contains a space.
  • You edit an Excel 2003 workbook that is embedded as an icon in a document of another program. If you insert a chart as a new sheet, the chart has a size of zero (0). Additionally, the chart appears very small.
  • When you programmatically count the dependent cells of a cell that is in a data table more than one time, the macro does not count the cells. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
    Run-time error '1004':

    No cells were found.
  • When you recalculate a workbook in Excel 2003, Excel 2003 may unexpectedly quit. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    This issue may occur if all the following conditions are true:
    • You disable the macros when you open the workbook.
    • You use the HLOOKUP function or the VLOOKUP function to search for a value in a table array.
    • The table array contains a formula that has not been calculated.
  • Consider the following scenario. You try to save a workbook that contains a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications project in Excel 2003. This workbook was opened from a mapped drive location. In this scenario, the workbook is not saved. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
    Document cannot be saved.
    If you try to save the workbook to a local location after you receive the error message, the workbook cannot be saved.
  • Consider the following scenario. You copy a cell in Excel 2003. This cell is contained on a worksheet that also contains a comment to a new workbook. The comment is also copied to this new workbook. In this scenario, Excel 2003 unexpectedly quits when you perform the following actions:
    • Rest the mouse on the comment in the new workbook.
    • Click the cell that contains the comment.
    Additionally, you receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to the following error signature:

  • If you type a formula that contains the Choose function, Excel 2003 may unexpectedly quit. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to the following error signature:
    Application nameApplication versionModule nameModule versionOffset

    This issue may occur if the formula for the Choose function contains a space that follows the first comma in the formula. The following is an example of such a formula:

    =Choose(1,space

  • You use a PivotTable on a Microsoft Excel worksheet to filter data that is extracted from an Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) database. When you update the PivotTable, the filter criteria are lost. Additionally, you cannot reset the filter criteria.
  • Consider the following scenario. You use the AutoComplete feature with the Input Method Editor 2000 (IME) in Excel 2003. Then, you run a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro.

    In this scenario, you receive the following error message if the VBA macro does certain worksheet manipulations:
    Run-time error '1004'
    Examples of worksheet manipulations include moving data, copying data, or making the worksheet visible.
  • You use a client program to extract data programmatically from an Excel worksheet. When you delay clicking to update the links in the Excel 2003 workbook, the Workbook_Open event in a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro may not run.
  • If you programmatically copy and paste a whole row from a list of data in Excel 2003, the data is copied and pasted. However, you receive the following error message:
    Run-time error '1004':

    Copy method of range class failed.
    This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
    • The list of data is filtered
    • There are hidden columns in the copy range.
  • You open a worksheet in Excel 2003 by using a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro in Microsoft Office Word 2003. If the VBA macro uses the GetObject() function to open the worksheet, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
    • When you scroll down and then up in the worksheet, incorrect data appears.
    • The worksheet does not open, and Excel 2003 may unexpectedly quit. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
      Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
      When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to the following error signature:

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.   • The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Service Pack 2 installed or Microsoft Office 2003 with Service Pack 1 installed. However, we have tested this hotfix more extensively on Office 2003 with Service Pack 2 than we have on Microsoft Office 2003 with Service Pack 1. If you install this hotfix on a computer that is running Microsoft Office 2003 with Service Pack 1, some file conflicts might occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
