Disconnected Local Area Connection icon is displayed after you click to clear the "notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" check box in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (902974)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You are using a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer. You perform the following actions:
  1. In Network Connections, you right-click Local Area Connection, and then you click Properties.
  2. You click to clear the Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity check box.
  3. You click OK.
The Windows XP SP 2-based computer loses network connectivity. However, you still receive notification that the connection has limited or no connectivity.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click Start, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Taskbar tab, click to select the Hide inactive icons check box, and then click Customize.
  3. Under Current Items, click Local Area Connection A network cable is unplugged.
  4. In the Behavior list, click Always hide, and then click OK two times.
