SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall Microsoft ActiveSync 4.0 and then reinstall an earlier version of Microsoft ActiveSync, you may experience unexpected external device connection and synchronization behavior.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because you reinstall an earlier version of ActiveSync before you remove the Rapi.dll file for ActiveSync 4.0.

Note When you uninstall ActiveSync 4.0, the Rapi.dll file remains in the %Windir%\System32 folder.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps to uninstall ActiveSync 4.0 and then reinstall an earlier version of ActiveSync on the desktop computer:
  1. Uninstall ActiveSync 4.0.
  2. In File Explorer, navigate to the System32 directory in the Windows directory, and then manually delete the Rapi.dll file.
  3. Reinstall an earlier version of ActiveSync.
