- You use Outlook Web Access to attach a digitally-signed e-mail attachment to an e-mail message that is not digitally signed.
In this scenario, when the message recipient receives the e-mail message, that recipient experiences one of the following symptoms: - If the e-mail message was sent without information in the message body, the message is received as an opaque-signed message.
- If the e-mail message was sent with information in the message body, the message is received without the e-mail attachment.
Therefore, you cannot successfully send a digitally-signed e-mail attachment to a recipient by using Outlook Web Access from a computer on which S/MIME is installed. RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. Modify the registry at your own risk.After you apply this hotfix, you must create and set a new DWORD value for the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\InternetContent
To do this, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.

Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\InternetContent - On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
- In the New Value #1 box, type ConvertPKCS7SIGAttachmentToMAPI, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click ConvertPKCS7SIGAttachmentToMAPI, and then click Modify.
- In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal.
- In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
- Exit Registry Editor.
