FIX: You receive an error message if you use the sp_addalias or sp_dropalias procedures when the IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS option is set to ON in SQL Server 2000 SP4 (901212)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4), you perform one of the following tasks:
  • You use the sp_addalias procedure to add an alias in the user database.
  • You use the sp_dropalias procedure to remove an alias from the user database.
In this scenario, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Server: Msg 266, Level 16, State 2, Procedure sp_dropalias, Line 31 Transaction count after EXECUTE indicates that a COMMIT or ROLLBACK TRANSACTION statement is missing. Previous count = 0, current count = 1.
Server: Msg 15002, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_dropalias, Line 30 The procedure 'sp_dropalias' cannot be executed within a transaction.
This problem occurs when you set the IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS option to ON.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the sp_addalias and sp_dropalias procedures incorrectly run operations that start transactions before the procedures verify that the IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS option is set to ON.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Note Because of file dependencies, the most recent hotfix or feature that contains these files may also contain additional files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, set the IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS option to OFF before you run the sp_addalias procedure or the sp_dropalias procedure.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
