Some e-mail messages that are sent by Outlook 2003 users are not delivered after you enable the Sender Filtering feature in Exchange Server 2003, and message senders may receive a non-delivery report message (901160)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You enable the Sender Filtering feature on the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. After you enable the Sender Filtering feature, some messages that are sent by users of Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 are not delivered by the server that is running Exchange Server 2003. Message senders may receive a non-delivery report (NDR) message that includes an error message. The error message is similar to the following error message:
4.4.7 Dropping connection due to an error on this server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the message that was sent has a blank From field in the message header.

RESOLUTION

Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Messages that have a blank From field are not delivered in Exchange Server 2003 even when the following conditions are true:
  • The Filter messages with blank sender check box in Microsoft Exchange System Manager is not selected. The Filter messages with blank sender check box is located on the Sender Filtering tab in the Message Delivery properties under Global Settings.
  • The message has other valid originator fields, such as the following:
    • Sender
    • ResentFrom
    • ResentSender
