Installation information
The update that is described in this article contains a
server-side update and a new Advanced Client. To deploy this update, follow
these three steps.
Step one: Primary site serversInstall update 901034 on all primary site servers to
update your management points. To do this, follow these steps:
- Install update 901034 on each primary site server.
Note When you install update 901034 on site server, the Client.msi
file and the Mp.msi file are copied to the \\sms\client\i386 folder. Setup
automatically runs the Mp.msi file to update the management point. - When you are prompted on each site, stop the SMS services
and reset the site.
Step two: Secondary site serversIf you have proxy management points on secondary sites,
install update 901034 on each secondary site server. To do this, follow the
steps in "Step one: Primary site servers."
Step three: Advanced ClientsDistribute the new Advanced Client (Client.msi). To do
this, use either of the following methods:
- Use SMS software distribution to update the exiting
Advanced Clients with the Client.msi file.
- Use Client Push Installation to update the exiting Advanced
Clients with the Client.msi file. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start the Client Push Installation Wizard.
- On the Client Installation Options
page, select the Always install (repair or upgrade existing
client) option.
- Follow the steps to complete the wizard.
Note When you use the Client Push Installation method, the Advanced
Client automatically receives the latest version of the Client.msi file. You do
not need to move or copy the Client.msi file.
Notes- You can use the Client.msi file to update SMS 2003 Advanced
Clients that have not been upgraded to SMS 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). However,
you cannot use the updates that are required for Microsoft Inventory Tool for
Updates to update SMS 2003 Advanced Clients that have not been upgraded to SMS
2003 SP1.
- If you update a site with the new Advanced Client
(Client.msi) before you have installed update 901034 and reset the site,
duplicate updates will be listed in the SMS database. One of the duplicate
updates will be missing the UpdateID and ProductID information.
- Members of the SMS Reporting Users group may be denied access to reports after a site reset. If you have added any users or groups to DCOM permissions for SMS_REPORTING_POINT, such as the SMS Reporting Users, you may have to re-add the group to the permissions. A site reset reinstalls all SMS services. Therefore, default DCOM permissions are restored.
- The SMS Bootstrap service may run for some time after the reset. The Bootstrap service is called on to reinstall each component and may have to wait to stop components, such as the SMS_EXECUTIVE service, in a busy environment.
