You receive a 'Blank CD' message after you connect a portable CD or DVD recorder to a Windows XP-based computer (900964)

SYMPTOMS

You connect a portable CD or DVD recorder (burner) to a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer. In this scenario, you receive a message that a blank CD has been inserted. The message is similar to the following: Windows can perform the same action each time you insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file:

Blank CD

What do you want Windows to do? You receive this message even though the CD or DVD recorder does not contain a blank disc.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions occur in the order in which they are listed:
  1. You connect a portable CD or DVD recorder to the Windows XP-based computer.
  2. You insert a disc into the recorder.
  3. You disconnect the recorder from the Windows XP-based computer.
  4. You remove the disc from the recorder.
  5. You connect a CD or DVD recorder to the Windows XP-based computer.

    Note This recorder is not necessarily the same CD or DVD recorder that you previously connected.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, click Cancel when you receive this message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
