The operation is unsuccessful when you try to install an ActiveX control or an add-in on a Windows XP-based client computer (900905)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install an ActiveX control or an add-in on a Windows XP-based client computer, the operation is unsuccessful.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The ActiveX control or the add-in is self-signed.
  • The "Enable trusted publisher lockdown" policy is enabled in the Group Policy Object Editor.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the Group Policy Object Editor to disable the "Enable trusted publisher lockdown" policy. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In the Group Policy Object Editor, expand User Configuration under Local Computer Policy.
  3. Expand Windows Settings, and then expand Internet Explorer Maintenance.
  4. Click Security, and then in the right pane, double-click Authenticode Settings.
  5. In the Authenticode Settings dialog box, click to clear the Enable trusted publisher lockdown check box.
  6. Click OK.
