INTRODUCTION

Microsoft Product Support Reporting Tool COM+ contains scripts and other utilities that capture critical system information, diagnostic information, and configuration information about the computer. This article describes how to install and use Microsoft Product Support Reporting Tool COM+ (MPSReport_COM.exe).

About the tool

Microsoft Product Support Services customers can use Microsoft Product Support Reporting Tool COM+ to gather detailed system status and configuration information. The data that is collected by the tool helps Microsoft Support Professionals troubleshoot operation and installation in COM+.

Microsoft Product Support Reporting Tool COM+ is a self-installing tool that runs on the following Microsoft operating systems:
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows XP
Every time that you run the tool, the tool is reinstalled. The tool overwrites the previous installation and then calls the MPSRpt.cmd file to gather the data for the reports.

Note The tool does not make any registry changes or modifications to the operating system.

Obtain and then install the tool

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

DownloadDownload the MPSReport_COM.exe package now. To install the tool, double-click the MPSReport_COM.exe file, and then accept the End User License Agreement (EULA). Microsoft Product Support Reporting Tool COM+ starts to collect data after you accept the EULA. The tool may appear to stop responding, but the tool may take from five minutes to fifteen minutes to finish. The tool generates a Computer_name_MPSReports_COM.cab file in the %SystemRoot%\MPSReports\COM\cab folder.

Note In the file name, Computer_name is the name of the computer.

This file contains the reports that are generated by the tool. If the .cab file is not created, copy all the files in the %SystemRoot%\MPSReports\COM folder to a compressed file. Send the .cab file or the compressed file to the Microsoft Support Professional by using the method that the Microsoft Support Professional specifies.

Note The %SystemRoot% folder is the folder where you installed the operating system. Typically, the %SystemRoot% folder is the C:\Winnt folder or the C:\Windows folder.
