Empty Font List in Works for Windows (90997)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Works 2.0
- Microsoft Works 2.0a
This article was previously published under Q90997 SUMMARY
When several hundred fonts have been installed in Windows, the font
list box on the toolbar and in the Font & Style dialog Box in Works
for Windows may be empty. In addition, you may receive an "Out of
Memory" error message after selecting Font & Style from the Format
menu in a Word Processor document.
MORE INFORMATIONWorkaround
A workaround is to reduce the number of fonts to eliminate the error
and display the fonts in the list box.
The font list is maintained in a 10K buffer that is shared with other
dialog components. The font names are stored in this 10K buffer. When
the 10K buffer is exceeded, the font list will be empty or you will
receive an "Out of Memory" error message when opening the dialog box.
The number of fonts it takes to duplicate this problem depends on the
font names and the font variations. For example, Arial requires only 5
bytes of memory for the name, but AvantGarde-Thin-Italic requires 22
bytes. It is difficult to calculate the number of fonts that can be
listed in Works for Windows because it depends on the length of the
font name and the number of sizes enumerated by the font.
NOTE: This problem does not occur in Works 3.0 and 4.0, 4.5 and 4.5a
because these versions allow you to store many more fonts.
