Works: Filename Does Not Change for Lotus 1-2-3 Only Format (90459)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Works 2.0
- Microsoft Works 2.0a
- Microsoft Windows 3.0
- Microsoft Windows 3.1
This article was previously published under Q90459 SUMMARY
According to pages 167-168 of the "Microsoft Works For Windows User's
Guide," saving a file in the Lotus 1-2-3 Only format will change the
extension on the filename.
This is not true. The file will still be saved with the .WKS
extension, which may overwrite the original file.
MORE INFORMATION
This problem is mostly academic, since the Works SS format (.WKS) is
based on the Lotus format. The Lotus 1-2-3 Only format meets strict
compatibility with Lotus, while the Works SS format is mostly
compatible, since there are sometimes pieces of information that are
used by Microsoft Works that are not used by Lotus.
The .WK1 extension used by newer versions of Lotus 1-2-3 is also
directly compatible with Microsoft Works for Windows, aside from the
usual limitations with respect to macro support and other features
that not common to both programs.
