SUMMARY

In Microsoft Works for Windows, you may receive the following error message when starting WorksWizards:
Cannot start WorksWizard.
When you choose the OK button, this message may be followed by:
MSWORKS.INI file not valid
This may be caused by the MSWORKS.INI file missing its [Wizards] section.

MORE INFORMATION

If the MSWORKS.CBT directory containing the Works for Windows tutorial files is present and the file size of WIZZY1.LSN is not zero, then it may be possible to get the Wizards to work without reinstalling.

  1. Exit Works for Windows and return to the Program Manager.
  2. Open Notepad from the Accessories group in Windows.
  3. From the File menu, choose Open.
  4. The MSWORKS.INI file should be located in the Windows directory. Switch to this directory, and make sure that the List Files of Type option is set to All Files (*.*)
  5. Check for the presence of a [Wizards] section. This can be done easily using the Find command from the Search menu. Make sure that the section's formatting matches that below, adding the section if necessary.
           [Wizards]
           Wizard1=Address Books@@wizzy1.lsn@2
           Wizard2=Form Letters@@wizzy1.lsn@3
           Wizard3=Mailing Labels@@wizzy1.lsn@1

    The "@" characters are delimiters. They separate the information that will be available when you bring up Wizards from the information that Wizards need to find the tutorial files. The pair of @ signs in the middle would normally have a paragraph description of how the particular Wizards module works and what it does. This information is not necessary for basic WorksWizards functionality.
  6. Once the section has been added, save the MSWORKS.INI file by choosing Save from the File menu.
  7. Finally, close Notepad and restart Works. The WorksWizards should now be available.
