If you paste text from one Word 2003 document into a second Word 2003 document, the Normal style of the first Word 2003 document overwrites the Normal style of the second Word 2003 document (898616)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Word 2003

SYMPTOMS

You open a Microsoft Office Word 2003 document that uses the Normal style. You open a second Word 2003 document that uses a different Normal style. If you paste text from the first Word 2003 document into the second Word 2003 document, the Normal style of the first Word 2003 document overwrites the Normal style of the second Word 2003 document.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you use a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro to query or to copy the XML properties of a Word 2003 document. When you use a VBA macro to query or to copy XML properties, Word 2003 sets a flag to paste text and styles into the destination document. If the Normal style of the source document is different from the Normal style of the destination document, the Normal style of source document overwrites the Normal style of the destination document.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, undo the paste operation, and then paste the text into the destination document again. When you undo the paste operation, the flag that Word 2003 sets is cleared. Then, when you paste the text into the destination document, the text uses the Normal style of the destination document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.
