Outlook Express 6.0 stops responding when you try to log on to your e-mail account (898123)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 SP1
- Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, when used with:
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
SYMPTOMSWhen you start Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0, you may be prompted to log on to your e-mail account by typing the user name and the password in the Log on dialog box. However, if you click the Outlook Express window, Outlook Express stops responding. Additionally, the Log on dialog box disappears. When you click the Outlook Express window again, the Log on dialog box does not reappear.CAUSEThis problem occurs when all the following conditions are true: - The e-mail account does not have a password specified.
- You click Send/Receive on the Standard toolbar. Then, you return to the message list without entering the user name and the password when you are prompted.
Note The send and receive operations cannot be completed without the user name information and the password information. - The Log on dialog box is hidden behind the Outlook Express window. Additionally, the Log on dialog box cannot be brought to the foreground.
RESOLUTIONThis problem is fixed in update 900930.

WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, perform one of the following actions when you are prompted to log on to your e-mail account: - Click Cancel.
- Type the user name and the password, and then click OK.
