The trust relationship between two domains is broken when you try to join a Windows 2000 Service Pack 4-based computer to the trusted domain (898064)

SYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario. You are using a Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)-based computer in a domain that trusts another domain. The computer name matches the NetBIOS name of the trusted domain. You have enabled NetBIOS name resolution in Windows Internet Name Service (WINS).
In this scenario, the following error message is logged in the System event log:Event ID: 4319

A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The
IP address of the machine that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name is in the Conflict state.
Additionally, when you use domain administrator account credentials to try to join the computer to the trusting domain, you see that the trust relationship between the two domains is broken. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the client computer overwrites the interdomain trust account (ITA) properties when you join the computer to the domain. The ITA is created in the trusted domain when a trust relationship is built with another domain. The client computer overwrites the ITA properties without verifying whether the ITA is being used. Therefore, the trust relationship between the domains breaks.RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, remove the client computer from the domain, and then rename the client computer. Reset the trust relationship between the domains. After you reset the trust relationship, join the client computer to the domain. To reset the trust relationship between the domains, follow these steps: - Open a command prompt on the client computer.
- At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
netdom trust trusted_domain_name /domain: trusting_domain_name /verify /reset
