You receive a "Service Pack 3 must be installed" error message when you use the Microsoft Office Project Server Sample Data Configuration Wizard in Project Server 2003 (897767)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Project Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You experience one of the following symptoms when you use the Microsoft Office Project Sample Data Configuration Wizard in Microsoft Office Project Server 2003:
  • When you try to install or to configure the sample database for a named instance of Microsoft SQL Server that is not the default instance, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft SQL Server with Service Pack 3 must be installed before configuring the sample database
Note You may receive this error message even if you have Microsoft SQL Server Service Pack 3 (SP3) or a later service pack installed on the computer.
  • The Project Sample Data Configuration Wizard installs the sample database to the default local MSSQL instance of SQL Server.

For example, the Project Sample Data Configuration Wizard creates the sample database in the following folder:

    Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSLQ\Data\MSPSampleDatabase

However, the default MSSQL named instance of SQL Server is not used. The Project Sample Data Configuration Wizard does not install the sample database in the named instance of SQL Server.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Project Sample Data Configuration Wizard cannot restore the data to a named instance of SQL Server.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, run the Project Sample Data Configuration Wizard on a SQL Server that does not use named instances.

To use the sample database in a named instance of SQL Server, you must manually restore the database. The sample database is a file named SAMPPROJ.BAK. This sample database file is located on the Project Server 2003 installation CD, in the following folder:

\SUPPORT\SAMPLE\1033\SAMPPROJ.BAK

After you manually restore the database, follow these steps to complete the process so that you can use the sample database in a named instance of SQL Server:
  1. Use the Site Editor tool (Editsite.exe) to configure a new Microsoft Internet Information Services virtual directory.
