You may not be able to connect to a domain controller by using LDAP over an SSL connection when the domain controller is running Windows 2000 Server with SP4 (897721)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. A certificate expires on a domain controller that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4 (SP4). Then, the certificate is renewed. In this scenario, you may not be able to connect to the domain controller by using the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) over a Security Sockets Layer (SSL) connection. Additionally, the following event may be logged in the System log:Event Type: Error
Event Source: Schannel
Event Category: None
Event ID: 36876
Description: The certificate received from the remote server has not validated correctly. The error code is 0x80090328. The SSL connection request has failed. The attached data contains the server certificate.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the domain controller continues to use the expired certificate until the domain controller restarts.

MORE INFORMATION

This hotfix introduces a new operational attribute. Follow these steps to recognize a newly installed domain controller certificate:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type ldp.exe , and then click OK.
  2. Click Connection, and then click Connect.
  3. Type the name of the domain controller in the Server box, type 389 in the Port box, and then click OK.
  4. Click Connection, and then click Bind.
  5. Type the administrator name, type the password, type the domain name, and then click OK.
  6. Click the Browser menu, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Attribute box, type renewServerCertificate.
  8. In the Values box, type 1.
  9. Click to select the Add check box, click Enter, and then click Run.
  10. Close the Ldp.exe utility.
