FIX: You receive a "The stub received bad data" error message when you run COM+ or COM server-side programs and COM+ or COM client-side programs on a Windows XP SP2-based computer (897662)

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft COM+ or Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) server-side programs and COM+ or COM client-side programs on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, you may receive an error message from the client that is similar to the following:
0x800706f7
The stub received bad data.
Note This problem occurs after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the FADF_BSTR fFeature field flag is not set correctly in the SafeArray method on the client computer even though the array element type is set as VT_BSTR.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
