This article contains information about the new language locales that are included in update 897338 for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Microsoft Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs. This article describes how to perform the following tasks:

  • Use the new language locales to specify how some programs display numbers, currencies, dates, and times.
  • Use the new language locales to specify the language that is used by non-Unicode programs.

New language locales that are included in update 897338

Update 897338 adds support for the following language locales:
  • Bosnian (Cyrillic, Bosnia and Herzegovina)
  • Filipino (Philippines)
  • Frisian (Netherlands)
  • Inuktitut (Latin, Canada)
  • Irish (Ireland)
  • Luxembourgish (Luxembourg)
  • Mapudungun (Chile)
  • Mohawk (Mohawk)
  • Nepali (Nepal)
  • Pashto (Afghanistan)
  • Romansh (Switzerland)

How to use a language locale to specify how some programs display numbers, currencies, dates, and times

  1. Click Start, click Run, type intl.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Click the Regional Options tab.
  3. In the Select an item to match its preferences, or Click Customize to choose your own formats box, click the appropriate locale, and then click OK.

How to specify the language that is used for non-Unicode programs

  1. Click Start, click Run, type intl.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use box, click the locale that you want, and then click OK.

How to remove update 897338

If you are using one of the new locales, and you want to remove update 897338 from the computer, change the locale to a locale that is not one of the locales that are listed in the "New language locales that are included in update 897338" section. To change the locale, follow these steps.

Note Perform this procedure for every user profile on the computer that is using one of the new locales.
  1. Use an account that has administrator credentials to log on to the computer.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type intl.cpl, and then click OK.
  3. For non-Unicode-based programs, follow these steps:
    1. Click the Advanced tab.
    2. In the Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use box, click a locale that is not listed in the "New language locales that are included in update 897338" section, and then click OK.
    For Unicode-based programs, follow these steps:
    1. Click the Regional Options tab.
    2. In the Select an item to match its preferences, or Click Customize to choose your own formats box, click a locale that is not listed in the "New language locales that are included in update 897338" section, and then click OK.
