You cannot use the Secedit.exe command-line tool to export the local security policy settings on a stand-alone workstation that is running Microsoft Windows XP (897327)

SYMPTOMS

You cannot use the Secedit.exe command-line tool to export the local security policy settings on a stand-alone workstation that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows XP SP1 and Windows XP SP2 does not store the local security policy settings in the local security policy database (Secedit.sdb). Therefore, Secedit.exe does not find the settings in the database.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

MORE INFORMATION

This hotfix contains an updated version of Secedit.exe that can export the local security policy settings on a Windows XP-based stand-alone workstation. To use this version of Secedit.exe to export these settings, type the following command at a command prompt:

secedit /export /cfg cfg_filename /log log_filename

In this command, cfg_filename is the file name of the security template, and log_filename is the file name of the log file for the process.

Note When you export the local security policy settings on a Windows XP-based stand-alone workstation, the /db switch has no effect.
