The Setup program stops responding, and you receive a low disk space error when you install Windows XP (897099)

SYMPTOMS

The following symptoms may occur when you install Microsoft Windows XP:
  • The Setup program highlights a hidden partition as a partition that is available for the Windows XP installation.
  • The Setup program stops responding.
  • You receive a low disk space error.
Note An installed program or the computer manufacturer may create and then use a hidden partition for diagnostic tools or for hard disk drive (HDD) recovery.

CAUSE

By default, the text-mode part of the Windows XP Setup program highlights a hidden partition as an unknown partition to which no drive letter is assigned. If this hidden partition has insufficient disk space for the Windows XP installation, you receive a low disk space error.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, select another partition and then continue the installation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
