The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004

SYMPTOMS

When you view the details of the .dvr-ms files in your Recorded TV folder, several files may have a duration of zero hours and minutes. Or, the files may have a short duration in seconds, typically less than 20 seconds.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The computer has two analog TV tuner cards installed.
  • The drivers that are installed for the TV tuner cards are designed for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004.
When these conditions are true, the drivers for each TV tuner card try to obtain exclusive access to the audio encoder at the same time. This conflict between the drivers means that neither TV tuner card can access the audio encoder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must update the TV tuner card drivers to the latest versions. You can use the hardware update feature of Windows Update. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Update.
  2. Click Custom Install.
  3. Click Select optional hardware updates.
  4. Click to select all the check boxes under Optional hardware updates.
  5. Click Go to install updates, and then click Install.
  6. Follow the instructions to install the updates.
  7. Restart the computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
