This Support WebCast session will explore I/O-related performance problems and resolutions for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. The session will discuss in-depth monitoring of I/O using System Monitor and Profiler, and will briefly introduce features of MOM 2005 SQL Management Pack. The WebCast will outline general best practices for I/O separation, and talk about techniques and tools that are available to troubleshoot potential spindle saturation. The session will address online transaction processing (OLTP) application architecture decisions that affect I/O performance, will provide a top-down approach to pinpoint high read/write queries, and will address common techniques to reduce I/O. The WebCast will review specific tools. This includes SET STATISTICS PROFILE, SET STATISTICS IO, fn_virtualfilestats, fn_trace_gettable, and baseline techniques using PSSDIAG and Rml.exe tools such as Read80trace and OSTRESS. The session will include index and maintenance strategies to maintain healthy indexes and minimize I/O consumption, and will also discuss methods to streamline reindexing in a production environment.

David G. Brown joined Microsoft Product Support Services in February 1992, supporting Windows/286, Windows/386, Windows 3.0, and then helped with the Windows 3.1 launch. David has a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. He joined Microsoft Access Product Support team as a tech lead during the debut of Microsoft Access version 1.0. David provided support through the launches of both Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and SQL Server 2000. In his current role at Microsoft as a Solutions Rapid Response Engineer (GSSC-SRRE), David focuses on serving the enterprise customer segment with the design, support, and troubleshooting of integrated Microsoft technologies.
