FIX: Widescreen content that you transfer from Windows Media Player 10 to a portable device may be distorted and unviewable (895572)

SYMPTOMS

When you transfer widescreen DVR-MS content from Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 to a portable device, the content may be distorted and unviewable on the device. This problem may occur when you transfer widescreen DVR-MS content to a Portable Media Center device.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows Media Player 10 incorrectly reads the pixel aspect ratio when you transfer widescreen DVR-MS content to a portable device.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next release that contains this hotfix.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

After you apply this hotfix, Windows Media Player 10 retrieves the image aspect ratio from the DVR-MS metadata header. Windows Media Player 10 uses the dimensions to calculate the correct pixel aspect ratio. This information is stored in the Media Library. Therefore, the correct aspect ratio is maintained for DVR-MS files.

Note If you previously added a DVR-MS file to the Media Library before you apply this hotfix, the incorrect data will still be in the Media Library. To resolve this problem, delete the DVR-MS file from the Media Library, and then add the DVR-MS file again after you apply the hotfix.
