Device playlist support in Windows Media Player 10 has known limitations (895418)

SYMPTOMS

Device playlist support in Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 has the following known limitations:
  • Playlists are never sent to devices during manual synchronization. Only the tracks are sent during manual synchronization. Playlists are sent to devices during automatic synchronization. However, not all devices support receiving playlists. Devices that are known to support receiving playlists include the following:
    • Pocket PCs that are running Windows Media Player 10 Mobile
    • Smartphones that are running Windows Media Player 10 Mobile
    • Devices that support MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)
    To verify whether a device supports MTP, see the product documentation for the device or contact the manufacturer for the device.
  • If tracks are added to an automatically synchronized Playlist A, but those tracks already exist on the device because of inclusion in synchronized Playlist B, Playlist A is not updated on the device to include those newly added tracks.
  • A track exists on the device on both Playlist A and Playlist B. Subsequently, the track is edited out of Playlist A by using Windows Media Player 10. Playlist A is not updated on the device.
  • The Windows Media Player 10 user interface shows the Playlists folder on the device. However, the Windows Media Player 10 user interface does not display any contents. This is true even if playlists are present on the device. The Windows Media Player 10 user interface does not display any contents to avoid Playlist manipulation outside automatic synchronization.
  • Windows Media Player 10 deletes playlists in the Playlists folder of the device during automatic synchronization. This problem occurs if the playlists are created by other applications and are not included by the user in the automatic synchronization profile.

CAUSE

Most of these limitations reflect design choices that were made when Windows Media Player 10 was being developed.

RESOLUTION

To copy playlists to a media device by using Windows Media Player 10, follow these steps:
  1. Establish an automatic synchronization relationship between your PC and your device.
  2. Include the playlists that you want to use on the device. Include the playlists in the group of playlists that are included in automatic synchronization. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Connect your device. Start Windows Media Player 10.
    2. Switch to the Sync tab.
    3. Click Sync Settings. Click to select the playlist check boxes that you want to include.
    4. Click OK.
    Automatically, synchronization starts. Synchronization transmits the playlists that you want to the device at the end of the synchronization process.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
