You are prompted to restart your computer after you hot plug an Intel 1000P PCI Express network adaptor into a Windows Server 2003-based computer (895415)

SYMPTOMS

After you "hot plug" an Intel 1000P PCI Express network adaptor into your Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, the following issues occur:
  • You receive a message that states that you must restart your computer.
  • The second PCI-PCI bridge on the network adaptor has a yellow exclamation point next to it in Device Manager.
This issue does not occur after you "hot swap" an Intel 1000P PCI Express network adaptor.

Notes
  • Adding a device to an empty slot in a computer while the computer is running is known as "hot plugging" or "hot adding." The operating system automatically recognizes the change.
  • Removing a device and then replacing that device with an identical device in the same slot while the computer is running is known as "hot swapping" or "hot switching." The operating system automatically recognizes the change.

RESOLUTION

You do not have to do anything to resolve this issue. You can safely ignore the message and the yellow exclamation point. You do not have to restart the computer. This issue will not affect the performance of the computer or the performance of the network adaptor.

The second PCI-PCI bridge is not used. Therefore, you can ignore this bridge. If you want to, you can uninstall the second PCI-PCI bridge. However, uninstalling it is not required. To uninstall the second PCI-PCI bridge, start Device Manager, right-click the device that has a yellow exclamation point next to it, and then click Uninstall. Click Yes to verify that you want to uninstall it.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

After you restart your computer and then hot swap an Intel 1000P PCI Express network adaptor, no issues occur. That is, no issues occur after you restart a computer that has an Intel 1000P PCI Express network adaptor in a specific slot and then replace the network adaptor with an identical Intel 1000P PCI Express network adaptor in the same slot. This configuration works correctly.

After you restart your computer and then hot plug an Intel 1000P PCI Express network adaptor into an empty slot, both of the network ports on the network adaptor work correctly. However, the following issues will occur:
  • You are prompted to restart the computer. You can safely ignore this message. Click Cancel when you receive this message. You do not have to restart the computer.
  • Device Manager shows the second PCI-PCI bridge for the device with a yellow exclamation point next to it. You can safely ignore this condition. You can either leave the second PCI-PCI bridge unchanged, or you can uninstall the second PCI-PCI bridge. Neither condition will affect the correct operation of the device.
The Intel 1000P PCI Express network adaptor includes two PCI-PCI bridges. The second bridge is not used by the network adaptor. Both of the 1000P PCI Express network ports are provided by the first bridge.

After you hot plug the device, Windows assigns resources to only the first bridge. After you restart the computer, or after you hot swap the device, Windows assigns resources to both bridges.

After you hot plug the device, the first bridge receives resources. Both of the Intel 1000P PCI Express network ports will work correctly. However, Windows prompts you to restart the computer because the second bridge does not receive any resources. Additionally, the device appears with a yellow exclamation point next to it in Device Manager. However, because the second bridge is not used for anything, you can safely ignore both conditions.
