SYMPTOMS

A handle is leaked if you restore a mailbox store by using a Volume Shadow Copy Service-based program, but you do not restore the logs in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To find handles that are open, unzip the Handle.zip package, move to the folder of the Handle utility, and then run the following command at a command prompt:

handle -p store.exe |findstr MDBDATA

The results will look similar to the following text:

1f84: File C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA

This text shows that two handles are open. Only one handle should be open after a restore operation.
