Inventory Tool for Dell Update clients cannot download the Dell updates from the Dell FTP site in SMS 2003 (895158)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

If you try to download Dell updates from the Dell FTP site to your client computer, you receive the following error message:
HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication Required - The ISA Server requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy service is denied.
This symptom occurs if your client computer is running the Inventory Tool for Dell Updates program.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if your client computer is behind a Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server-based computer, and you have removed the ISA Server firewall client from your client computer. The Inventory Tool for Dell Updates program is not proxy-aware and does not support authentication challenges. Therefore, ISA Server cannot authenticate the Inventory Tool for Dell Updates program, and ISA Server blocks the Inventory Tool for Dell Updates program traffic.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

  1. Create a destination set on the ISA Server-based computer that includes the name or the IP address of the Dell FTP server.
  2. Join this destination set to a rule that allows anonymous access.
  3. Create a protocol definition that allows the anonymous FTP.

Method 2

Install the ISA Server firewall client on the computers that need to run the Inventory Tool for Dell Updates program. The firewall client creates an authenticated channel to the ISA Server-based computer that makes it possible for non-proxy aware programs to authenticate to the ISA Server. This authentication then becomes the default behavior.
