Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2000, you may receive error message 701, error message 802, and error message 17803 when many hashed buffers are available. These error messages are out-of-memory errors. Typically, this problem occurs on computers that are based on the 64-bit architecture that have a larger physical memory footprint. For example, this problem occurs on computers that have 20 gigabytes (GB) or more of memory. When this problem occurs, an Error event that is similar to the following is logged in the event log: LazyWriter: warning, no free buffers found.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the logic to allocate memory does not consider the overall hashed buffers that could be freed. Instead, the logic to allocate memory uses a hard-coded retry logic loop.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reduce queries that can consume large chunks of stolen memory. For example, reduce hashes and sorts.
