Part 2: Copying the Windows CD to the hard disk

In this part, we copy the content of your Windows CD to the hard disk.

Create a folder

Create a folder for storing the content. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  2. Select a drive that has sufficient free disk space. In this guide, we use drive D:\.
  3. Right-click an empty area in the drive, click New, and then click Folder.

  4. Type Xpcd as the name of this folder. Confirm this by pressing ENTER.

Check folder options

Do not start copying files at random. If you do, it may cause a problem at a later stage. You must copy all the files on the CD to the hard disk. This includes hidden files. Otherwise, your new Setup CD may not work. To do this, follow these steps
  1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  2. Click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Click to select the Display the contents of system folders check box.
  5. Select the Show hidden files and folders option.
  6. Click to clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm.
  7. Click to clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK. and then click OK.

Copy content from the CD

Copy the content of the CD to the Xpcd folder.
  1. Insert the Windows CD in the CD or DVD drive. If the auto-play feature starts, click Exit.
  2. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  3. Right-click the CD or DVD drive, and then click Open.

  4. Click Edit, and then click Select All.

  5. In the task pane, click Copy the selected items.

  6. Select the Xpcd folder, and then click Copy.

  7. Examine the Xpcd folder for the copied files. The contents of this folder should resemble the following image if you use a CD that includes Service Pack 1.
