SYMPTOMS

You open a presentation that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft PowerPoint in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 Viewer. PowerPoint 2003 Viewer may unexpectedly quit. Additionally, you receive an error message that is similar to the following error message.
Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: View an HTML version of the presentation in your Web browser

To view an HTML version of the presentation in your Web browser, follow these steps:
  1. Open the presentation in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003, in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002, or in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000.
  2. On the File menu, click Save as Web Page.
  3. In the Save as type box, click Web Page (*.htm; *.html).
  4. Click Save.
  5. Open the HTML version of the presentation in your Web browser.

Method 2: Resave the presentation before you view it in PowerPoint 2003 Viewer

To resave the presentation before you view it in PowerPoint 2003 Viewer, follow these steps:
  1. Open the presentation in either Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 or in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002.
  2. On the File menu, click Save as Web Page.
  3. In the Save as type box, click Web Page (*.htm; *.html).
  4. Click Save.
  5. Open the HTML version of the presentation in either PowerPoint 2003 or in PowerPoint 2002.
  6. On the File menu, click Save As.
  7. In the Save as type box, click Presentation (*.ppt).
  8. In the File name box, type a new name for the presentation.
  9. Click Save.
  10. Open the new presentation in PowerPoint 2003 Viewer.

The Office Error Reporting dialog box appears when an error occurs that causes a fatal event in the program.
