A CD drive or a DVD drive may not be detected on a Windows 2000-based computer (894487)

SYMPTOMSA CD drive or a DVD drive may not be detected when one of
the following conditions is true: - You turn on the drive while your computer is
running.
- You connect the drive while your
computer and the drive are both running.
- You connect the drive to your computer when a
disc is in the drive.
The drive appears in Device Manager with a black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, use one of the
following methods:
- Restart your computer.
- Reconnect the drive while your computer is running.
- Turn on the drive before you turn on
your computer.
- Make sure that there is no disc in the drive when you turn the drive on.

has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
in the "Applies to" section.
