A CD drive or a DVD drive may not be detected on a Windows 2000-based computer (894487)



The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

A CD drive or a DVD drive may not be detected when one of the following conditions is true:
  • You turn on the drive while your computer is running.
  • You connect the drive while your computer and the drive are both running.
  • You connect the drive to your computer when a disc is in the drive.
The drive appears in Device Manager with a black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Restart your computer.
  • Reconnect the drive while your computer is running.
  • Turn on the drive before you turn on your computer.
  • Make sure that there is no disc in the drive when you turn the drive on.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
