You receive a "[Wrn03] syntax [1:5]: Wrong or missing 'EventID' parameter" error message when you use the Evntcmd.exe command-line tool to configure the SNMP event translator in Windows Server 2003 (894311)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Evntcmd.exe command-line tool to configure the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) event translator, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
[Wrn03] syntax [1:5]: Wrong or missing 'EventID' parameter.
This issue may occur when you use the following method:
  1. You use the Event to Trap Translator (Evntwin.exe) tool to export a .cnf event file.
  2. You use the Evntcmd.exe command-line tool with the -v switch to parse the event file.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Evntwin.exe tool does not enclose the event log name in quotation marks. The Evntcmd.exe command-line tool interprets a space in the event log name as the end of the event log name if quotation marks are not present. Therefore, the Evntcmd.exe command-line tool incorrectly parses the event log name.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This bug was corrected in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

MORE INFORMATION

Evntwin.exe is a tool that is included with Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. You must install SNMP on the server for the Evntwin.exe tool to be available. You can use the Evntwin.exe tool to send SNMP traps when selected event IDs are logged in the event log. Evntcmd.exe is the command-line version of the Evntwin.exe tool.
