SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use the Microsoft Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes to connect Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 to Lotus Notes. The Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes retrieves a message by using the Lotus Notes API. If the message retrieval fails, Exchange Server 2003 tries to send a non-delivery report (NDR) message. Additionally, Exchange Server 2003 tries to remove the message. If sending the NDR message fails or if removing the message fails, the Lsntsmex.exe process is restarted. Additionally, although you expect this event to be logged in the Application log, no event is logged in the Application log.

Note The Lsntsmex.exe process is part of the Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
Date Time Version Size File name
   -----------------------------------------------------------
   18-May-2005 19:09 6.5.7233.17 4,523,008 Exconmsg.dll
   18-May-2005 18:58 6.5.7233.17 192,512 Lsntshc.dll
After you install this hotfix, you must set a registry value to enable the hotfix. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LME-NOTES\Parameters

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. In the details pane, type LogEventOnInboundError for the new DWORD value.
  5. Right-click LogEventOnInboundError, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal under Base.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. Quit Registry Editor.
Note After you configure this registry value, you must restart the computer.
  • If the LogEventOnInboundError registry value is set to 1, the Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes logs event ID 41423 in the Application log when the Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes encounters an error during the processing of an incoming message. Event ID 41423 is logged when the error is other than an out-of-memory error. Event ID 41423 indicates that the Lsntsmex.exe process will restart and will try to log the information if Exchange Server 2003 can obtain the information by using the Lotus Notes API.
  • If the LogEventOnInboundError registry value is not set to 1, the Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes does not log event ID 41423 in the Application log. Additionally, the Lsntsmex.exe process may be restarted repeatedly for several minutes.
Note After you install this hotfix, the following information about the original e-mail message will be logged repeatedly in event ID 41423 in the Application log:
  • The original message number in the in-memory message list
  • The sender of the message
  • The size of the message
  • The priority level of the message
  • The number of recipients in the message
  • The first and second recipient names in the message

STATUS
