MUI language settings do not work correctly in WordPad after you install security update MS04-041 on a Windows XP Service Pack 1-based computer (894072)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer that has the Multilingual User Interface (MUI) package installed.
  • You have installed security update MS04-041 on the computer.
  • You change the default program user interface language to another language.

Note You can use Regional and Language Options in Control Panel to change the program user interface language.
  • You start Microsoft WordPad.
In this scenario, when you start WordPad, you may notice that the language that appears in the WordPad user interface is the default English language instead of the language that you selected in Regional and Language Options.

Note Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes security update MS04-041. You may experience this problem on a Windows XP SP2-based computer if you install security update MS04-041 before you install Windows XP SP2.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because an incorrect registry entry value is set for one of the WordPad registry entries when you install security update MS04-041. The incorrect registry entry value prevents the MUI language resources from loading correctly. Therefore, WordPad uses the default English language for the WordPad user interface.
