You may receive a "STOP: FAILED" error message when you try to start Mech Warrior 4 (894043)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Mech Warrior 4, you may receive the following error message:
STOP: FAILED (0x80070057 - WINERR_One or more arguments are invalid ) - Set(0x8cb99038: EAX_ReverbProperties, EAX_DAMPING)

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the sound card in the computer cannot process all the DirectX information that the game sends to the sound card.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reduce the Hardware Acceleration setting for the sound card. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
  2. In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool dialog box, click the Sound tab.
  3. In the DirectX Features section, move the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider to the left until the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level reads No Acceleration.
  4. Click Exit.
  5. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
