SYMPTOMS

When you check the spelling of Spanish, Dutch (Netherlands), or Portuguese (Brazil) text in an e-mail message in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, the spelling checker does not check the spelling as you expect, and you receive an error message that is similar to the following.

Error in Spanish
Error durante la revisión ortográfica.
Error in Dutch (Netherlands)
Er is een fout opgetreden tijdens de spellingcontrole.
Error in Portuguese (Brazil)
Occoreu um erro durante a verificacao ortografica.
After the text is translated to English, the error message reads as follows:
Error occurred while checking spelling.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the value of the following registry entry is set to "0":

Subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling
Value Name: GermanPostReform
Data Type: DWORD
Value: 0

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must set the value of the GermanPostReform registry entry to "1." Or, you must delete the GermanPostReform registry entry.

How to set the value of the GermanPostReform registry entry to "1"

To set the GermanPostReform registry entry to "1," follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
  2. Move to the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling

    .
  3. In the right pane, right-click GermanPostReform.
  4. Click Modify.
  5. In the Value Data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  6. Exit Registry Editor.

How to delete the GermanPostReform registry entry

To delete the GermanPostReform registry entry, follow these steps:
  1. Repeat steps 1 through 4 in the section earlier in the " 'How to set the value of the GermanPostReform registry entry to "1' " section.
  2. Click Delete, and then click Yes.
  3. Exit Registry Editor.
