You receive a "A fatal setup error has occurred" error message, and "MSI Package (spsclisrv) setup failed" error messages are logged to the log files when you install SharePoint Portal Server 2001 (893695)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Setup program to install or to reinstall Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 on your computer, the installation is not successful. You receive the following error message in the Component Messages page of the wizard:
A fatal setup error has occurred. For details see <C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\SharePoint Portal Server\Logs\errorlog.txt>.
Additionally, you experience the following symptoms.

Setup.log file

When you view the Setup.log file, you see entries that are similar to the following.

[Setup run at <Time> on <Date>]
Component Name: Web Storage System
	Version:		6.0
	Installation Status:	Success
	Error Message:		NA

Component Name: Web Storage System Core
	Version:		6.0
	Installation Status:	Success
	Error Message:		NA

Component Name: SharePoint Portal Server
	Version:		NA
	Installation Status:	Failure
	Error Message:		A fatal setup error has occurred.  For details see <<Drive>:\Program 
Files\Microsoft Integration\SharePoint Portal Server\Logs\errorlog.txt>.

Component Name: Microsoft Search
	Version:		2.0
	Installation Status:	Success
	Error Message:		NA

Note In the log, an error message is logged for the SharePoint Portal Server component. A status of Failure appears next to Installation Status for the SharePoint Portal Server component.

Errorlog.txt file

When you view the Errorlog.txt file, you see an entry that is similar to the following.

[<Date>,<Time>] SharePoint Portal Server: [0] 
CPkmSetupComponent::InstallMSIPackage, MSI Package (spsclisrv) setup failed with 
error code 0x80070645.  Command=msiexec.exe.  Args= -i "<Drive>:\SharePoint Portal

Integration\SharePoint Portal Server\Logs\spsclisrv.Log" Reboot="ReallySuppress"

Eventlog.txt file

When you view the Eventlog.txt file, you see entries that are similar to the following.

[<Date>,<Time>] SharePoint Portal Server: LaunchProcess, (null)\msiexec.exe:

[<Date>,<Time> SharePoint Portal Server: ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** :

Server\Bin\spsclisrv.msi" /q -l*v "<Drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft

ARPSYSTEMCOMPONENT=1 SERVERINSTALL=1

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the System account does not have sufficient permissions for the folder where you want to install SharePoint Portal Server 2001. For example, this issue occurs if the System account does not have Full Control permissions for the folder where you want to install SharePoint Portal Server 2001.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, make sure that the System account has Full Control permissions for the folder where you want to install SharePoint Portal Server 2001. To assign Full Control permissions to the System account, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer, and then locate the folder where you want to install SharePoint Portal Server 2001.
  2. Right-click the folder, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. Click SYSTEM in the Group or user names box.
  5. In the Permissions for SYSTEM box, click to select the Allow check box next to Full Control.
  6. Click OK.
Note You may have to remove SharePoint Portal Server 2001 from your computer and then run the Setup program to reinstall SharePoint Portal Server 2001. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Run the Setup program. When you are prompted, click Uninstall, and then click Next. Follow the instructions in the wizard to remove SharePoint Portal Server 2001.
  2. Restart the computer if you are prompted to.
  3. Make sure that the System account has Full Control permissions for the folder where you want to install SharePoint Portal Server 2001.
  4. Run the Setup program. Follow the instructions in the wizard to install SharePoint Portal Server 2001.
