Shortcut icons may not appear correctly after you restart a docked Windows 2000 SP4-based computer (893655)

SYMPTOMS

After you restart a Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)-based computer that is docked to a docking station, shortcut icons that were previously created may not appear correctly.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions occur in the order that they are given:
  1. No docked hardware profile exists on the computer.
  2. You start the computer while it is not docked.
  3. You install a graphics adaptor.
  4. You create shortcuts on your desktop.

    Note These shortcuts can point to any program.
  5. You shut down Windows.
  6. You dock the computer.
  7. You start Windows.

    Note A docked hardware profile is automatically created.
  8. You restart the computer.
The problem occurs because of a timing conflict between the graphics adaptor and Windows Explorer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, re-create the shortcut icons that do not appear correctly.
