SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2000, when you use the READPAST lock hint to query a table, the lock hint may cause an access violation to occur. When the access violation occurs, you receive the following error message in the SQL Server error log:
SqlDumpExceptionHandler: SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process SPID generated fatal exception c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. SQL Server is terminating this process.
Additionally, the following stack dump is displayed in the details of the error message:

CAUSE

This problem may occur when any one of the following conditions is true:
  • One connection that is using the READPAST lock hint query is between a cursor open request and a cursor fetch request. Another connection updates rows of a bookmark result set. This condition may cause the bookmark position to be Null. The Null bookmark position causes access violation to occur.
  • Your application uses the Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) interface or the Microsoft OLEDB interface for server-side cursors that use the READPAST hint in SELECT statements.
